We want a controversy-free series: Dhoni

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Saturday said the fireworks would only be limited to on-field action, promising that his side would ensure a controversy-free India-Australia series without compromising on the intensity.
“Individuals do make mistakes. But as a professional cricketer, you don’t want it. There is a lot at stake, people look up to you, so you want it controversy-free. Still, it’s important you make it interesting,” said Dhoni referring to the 2008 series when ugly exchanges between the two sides almost led to the tour being abandoned midway.
All hell had broken loose during the second Test at Sydney when India was at the receiving end of a few controversial decisions, capped by the “Monkeygate scandal” which dragged a few players of the two teams into the chambers of a court.

Dhoni said injury-prone pacers Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma are expected to be fit for the first Test against Australia and precautions have been taken to ensure that they don’t break down in the middle of the series.
“We’ve missed Zaheer quite a few times in the past. We did give them (Zaheer and Ishant) some time off, they bowled in the practice game as well as in the practice session. They are shaping up well. There are two more days and we know a lot can happen in two days. Hopefully, they would all be available for selection,” Dhoni said at the pre-match press conference.
“We’ve tried to take as much precaution as we could (regarding Zaheer and Ishant). We’ve tried our best whatever we could do. Players have also played their part, they worked outside the field also, in the gym and the rehab sessions they needed to do. They have put in a lot of effort in practice. Hopefully, they wouldn’t have any injury.
“Everyone’s fit for the game. All players are looking fit which you need for the format of the game. We don’t need to be worried (on fitness count),” he added.
Dhoni also hoped the tour would be different in respect that India has never prepared as well as they have for the present tour.
“We’ve taken care of the preparation — if 12-14 days are not enough then even one month wouldn’t be enough. We’ve worked and looked at preparation from all angles so that once we are on the field, we can play by instinct and not worry about other factors.
“Our batters have toured here in the past. They know these conditions well. The first practice wicket (in Canberra) was very different, a bit on the slower side. But this one in the nets here has a bit more bounce which is useful,” he said.
Dhoni is conscious of the fact that everyone expects his team to win the present Test series but he doesn’t want to lose sight of the immediate task.
“How we start in the first Test is important. We want to be in the moment. Break the match into sessions, try to win more sessions than the opposition team. If we win enough sessions, we will win the Test. Our emphasis would be on small things, not where we want to be at the end of the fourth Test.
“There’s no point in taking that extra pressure. It will not help us. We need to keep it simple.”
Dhoni then went on to speak about a few individuals of the side, including Sachin Tendulkar, who everyone expects to get his 100th international century at the MCG.
“He (Sachin) keeps it simple. He would get it, sometime in this or the next Test, this or the next series. It is on the way. It isn’t something he wouldn’t achieve. But if he gets it soon, everyone would feel relieved.
“Getting 100 hundreds is something really big. If you ask me, he’s played more international cricket than we have even practiced. He also shares a lot with youngsters who are new to the side. Everyone in the world would cherish the moment when he gets his 100,” Dhoni said.
Dhoni also said that opener Virender Sehwag’s form would also be a key factor for the team.
“Virender Sehwag is also a key player for us. We rely on him to give a good opening start. He scores at a quick pace, puts the opposition bowlers under pressure. When he is at the crease, you can’t bowl warm up deliveries.
“If it’s the first delivery or the last ball before stumps, he would score. It doesn’t matter as long as it is in his areas. It’s good to have him in the side. He enjoys the way he plays. He backs himself to play those shots,” he said.
On the speculation surrounding Ishant’s fitness, Dhoni said, “Ishant is a very honest player. He works really hard at the nets. In a few years he has been with the team, he’s someone who turns up on the field and gives his 100 per cent. He has a good attitude.
“He plays 60-70 per cent of his cricket in India where it’s difficult to motivate yourself for even if you bowl 140kmph, the ball hardly reaches the wicketkeeper.”
Dhoni also had words of praise for young off-spinner R Ashwin, whom he expects to do well in the series.
“It’s good to have him, he has few variations. Even when wicket is not helping him, whether he is getting help or not, he adapts well. That’s a big positive. The wickets here would be different from the sub-continent as he would get good bounce. He can capitalise on it but he needs to be patient.
“Spinners have key roles in longer format especially. As the game goes and the wicket becomes slower, you need spinners to make use of the foot marks. You need them to keep things tight, give time off to fast bowlers and give crucial breakthroughs. They have a very crucial role.”
About his own batting, Dhoni admitted this it hasn’t been a very great year for him in terms of batting at number seven but also pointed out that he missed out on big scores a few times because he ran out of partners.
“It’s not been a brilliant year for me at number seven. But I’ve score a lot of 80s. Sometimes I have run short of partners, as it was in South Africa. All of a sudden, I didn’t have batsmen batting with me. I tried to score runs and got out. However, I would like to improve as an individual. Great players are helping me.”
Dhoni didn’t want to run down Australia’s young cricketers only because they are inexperienced.
“People talk a lot about inexperience. Even McGrath and Shane Warne made debut. They hadn’t played many games but in due course, they became legends. Youngsters can also do so. Inexperience will not count as long as you can adapt to the conditions.”
One concern, Dhoni was candid enough to admit, was the massive size of the MCG which can test the fielding ability of cricketers.
“It’s massive, a really big ground. We have seen batsmen have run four, even five is possible if fielder is slow. Because the outfield is lush and green, the shots get slow and you run a lot of singles which puts pressure on the fielders in the outfield.
“It’s a bit of concern for fielding is very important. We’ve got quite a few good fielders in the outfield. What we want to achieve though is good catching in the slips. I think that would be important.”

Clarke hopes Sachin doesn’t hit 100th ton against Australia

Australia captain Michael Clarke enjoys watching Sachin Tendulkar bat but hoped that the Indian icon doesn’t score his much-awaited 100th international century during the upcoming four-match Test series, starting on December 26.
“That’s (Tendulkar scoring his 100th international ton) certainly a prospect. I hope that doesn’t happen. I hope he scores it in his next series,” said Clarke ahead of their first Test.
“He’s been an unbelievable player for such a long period of time. I really enjoy watching him bat. If he does score his 100th century, he deserves every bit of credit and applause.
“I think it’s going to be a great crowd at this Test match, watching him and supporting him. I wish him well but in a perfect world, I’d like Sachin to score his 100th century in the next series India play,” he added.

Clarke has showed that he is all ready for the Indians by announcing his playing XI for the first Test 48 hours in advance.
Opener Ed Cowan has been named in the final XI and is all to make his Test debut, while Ben Hilfenhaus’ experience was preferred over Mitchell Starc’s raw promise. The out-of-form duo of Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey have also been retained in the side.
“I’m confident we’ve got the best eleven to help us win this first Test in these conditions. I can use Hussey, Ponting and myself to bowl a few overs. David Warner can bowl leg-spinners too. We’ve got the right XI to give ourselves a chance to win this Test,” insisted Clarke.
The captain, meanwhile, warned his teammates that aggression on the field should be within a limit and not result in ugly behaviour or controversy.
“I don’t think we need to (meet MS beforehand in order to ensure relations don’t break down during the series). I think both teams understand where we’re at. The relationship between the Aussie and Indian team couldn’t be stronger.”
“We all understand there’s a fine line you can go to but can’t cross. I guarantee nobody in the Australian team will cross that. If they do, there’ll be punishments from the ICC but also from Cricket Australia,” clarified Clarke.
The 30-year-old skipper expressed confidence if Australia could play consistently for five days they would win the first Test.
“I think we are as well prepared as we can be. Now it’s about getting out there and playing some good cricket. I think if we can be consistent and execute our skills for the whole five days, we’ll win this Test match,” he said.
Stating that he would want to bat first if he wins the toss, Clarke said, “My favourite thing to do when we win the toss, is always bat. But you can’t make that decision unless you see the conditions on the day of the toss.
“I’ll wait and see what the wicket is like, see what the overhead conditions are like. I have no concerns if we bat first on that wicket. If there’s a bit of movement, I’m confident we’re ready for it.
“It’s important we play our natural game if we bat first. I think you must have the confidence to back your own ability. We’ve done plenty of work, so (if the batsmen stumble) it’s not from lack of training,” he added.
Clarke said he did not want his batsmen to be restrained if Australia bat first in tough conditions on the first day.
“I think the start of any Test match is crucial, whether you bat or bowl…we’ve spoken about that for a while now that you need to start well.
“I make no bones about it, we’ve had extra (preparation) time as a batting unit because we needed to get better facing the new ball. We’ve done the work though. That’s all I can ask from the boys. It’d make every single one of us very pleased and proud, if the ball is seaming around, we can play well — which we’ve done in periods,” he explained.
“The moving ball, whether it’s spin or swing, is the hardest to face as a batsman, no matter who it’s against. English conditions probably allow that to happen more than Australian conditions, but in saying that whatever surface we get will be the same for both teams.
“I think the key is consistency with everything we do, as a batting unit and a bowling unit, (and) execution of our skills. All you can do is prepare as well as you possibly can to give yourself the best chance and I think we’ve done that over the past six days now, whether it be as a batting unit or all together as a team,” said Clarke.
Elaborating on why Hilfenhaus was preferred over Starc, Clarke said: “Hilf’s endurance is a factor in his promotion. I think it plays a part definitely. He’s a very good new ball bowler, he can bowl long spells and he’s had success against India as well. So there’s a few reasons why we decided to go with him.
“Mitch (Starc) is obviously disappointed…he’s got an enormous amount of talent. He’s quite tall, fast and can swing the ball back into the right-hander. He’s just got to keep working hard at his game.
Clarke also clarified that Shaun Marsh has completely recovered.
“Marsh’s back is fine. He’s taken it easy…to make sure he’s fully recovered and ready to go for the Boxing Day.”
Speaking at length about James Pattinson and Nathan Lyon, Clarke said: “Patto (Pattinson) is very important. As we’ve seen over the past couple of Tests, he’s come on in leaps and bounds. He bowls with good pace, can swing the ball and he’s only as important as the other guys around him.
“As for Nathan Lyon, I don’t think he needs counselling. He’s a wonderful talent…got to do things his way. We have got to make sure we bowl Nathan at the right times, set the right fields to give him a little bit of protection and then attack when it’s time to attack.”
Heaping praise on young Indian bowler Ravichandran Ashwin, Clarke said: “We’ve seen a fair bit of Ashwin, not too much in Test but in one-day cricket. He’s very talented bowler, gets a lot of bounce, can spin the ball and has got a doosra so he can spin it the other way as well.
“We’ve looked at plenty of his footage, we know he’s an important part of the team and we have to play him well to have success in this series.”
Clarke said he did not mind that he appeared to be less popular than Ponting when it comes to captaining the side.
“I’m not that concerned. It’s about scoring runs and winning games. That’s my job, that’s what I’m trying to do. I hope I’ve earned a bit of respect. I’ve played 70-odd Test matches and scored a few hundreds for my country so I hope there’s a bit of respect there already.
“My goals are no different to any (other) series I’ve played. I want to go out there, lead from the front and make sure I’m performing with the bat. But, most importantly, I want Australian cricket to continue to head in the right direction. I want us to play some good cricket,” he said.

Pakistan confident of giving tough fight to England: Mohsin

Test series wins over Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have whetted Pakistan’s appetite for success and they are capable of beating world number one Test side England next month, coach Mohsin Khan said.
However, interim coach Mohsin, who was retained after guiding his team to series victories over the sub-continent teams, said that England would pose a far bigger challenge for Pakistan.
“England is the number one Test team in the world and their recent performances have been outstanding,” Mohsin said.
“We are expecting a very tough contest and the good thing is our players are already talking about the series and its significance to Pakistan cricket.”
“It is true that Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are not as strong a challenge as England will be. But the good thing is that our team has developed a taste for success and every player is contributing in some way so we can win.”
Pakistan will play three Tests, four one-dayers and three Twenty20 matches against England in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, starting next month.
Mohsin, who was the chief selector until he was appointed coach last September, denied that the hosts will have any advantage from the low and slow pitches in the Gulf nation.
“England is a thorough professional side and has been stable under the guidance of (coach) Andy Flower and (captain) Andrew Strauss so what will matter is how you play session by session,” Mohsin said. “Conditions will be same for both sides.”
Mohsin, who played 48 Test matches for his country, denied that Pakistan will rely heavily on their spinners during the three-Test series.
“We are fortunate to be blessed with both quality pacers and spinners so we are not going to rely on anyone in particular,” the 56-year old said.
“Our recent mantra has been to focus and plan things on a match-to-match basis and we will continue with that against England as well.”
The Pakistani selectors are due to name the Test squad for the series on Monday. Pakistan are playing “home” series in the Gulf region due to security concerns in their own country.

PCB stops cricketers from playing in Bangladesh T20 league

Pakistan players have been refused permission to play in a Bangladesh Twenty20 Premier League by the Pakistan Cricket Board in order to concentrate on next month’s test series against England in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Nine Pakistani players have been offered contracts by different clubs in the Dhaka Premier League that begins on December 26 but the PCB official confirmed that former captains, Younis Khan, Shoaib Malik and Muhammad Hafeez, Abdul Rehman, Imran Farhat had all been told to not sign contracts.

“The PCB feels that at this time when the national team is due to play a very important test series against England it would not be appropriate to allow our top players to play in any foreign…league,” PCB media manager Nadeem Sarwar told Reuters.

“No player at this stage has been given permission to sign any contract.”

He said the board would soon also take a decision on whether to allow Umar Akmal, Wahab Riaz, Kamran Akmal, Sohail Tanvir the other players offered contracts by clubs in the BD league whether to sign contracts.

“These players also could be required for Pakistan duty at any time. But the board has not taken a decision on their contracts.”

The Pakistani team is currently touring Bangladesh and will return home next week before leaving for Dubai on January 9. The first of three tests against England start on January 16 with the squad scheduled to be named next week.

David Warner today made 102* off 51 balls. Warner scored 100 in just 50 balls at strike rate of exact 200.
Warner also scored third consecutive 100 in domestic T20, most consecutive hundreds by any batsman in T20

Saqibul, Nafees lead Bangladesh recovery

Nafees-fifty

Shakib Al Hasan and Shahriar Nafees helped Bangladesh recover from the early breakthroughs and gave their side a much-needed boost on Saturday by guiding the hosts to 234-5 on the opening day of the second test against Pakistan.

The pair’s fifth-wicket stand of 180 was Bangladesh’s first century partnership in tests for more than a year.

After a delayed start to the match due to thick fog, Pakistan won the toss and opted to send Bangladesh in and they gathered almost immediate earningses when Cheema struck in the second over of the day.

Mohammad Nazimuddin was the man to depart, trapped lbw for a duck, and soon after he was followed back to the dressing rooms by fellow opener Tamim Iqbal, who was caught by Cheema off the bowling of Umar Gul for 14.

That left Bangladesh in trouble on 16 for two but worse was to follow as they also lost Mohammad Mahmudullah (nought) and Nasir Hossain (seven) in the morning session, both players falling victim to Cheema.

Cheema bowl out Mahmudullah for a first ball duck and Nasir Hossain edged a simple catch to wicketkeeper Adnan Akmal off the bowling of Cheema again.

At lunch things looked grim for Bangladesh as Pakistan reduced the home side to 54 for four, who had suffered an innings defeat in the first of the two-match series against Pakistan, but Nafees and Shakib hit back after the break.

That partnership between Nafees and Shakib was the highlight for the hosts. They saw off the tricky conditions in the first session and grew in confidence once the conditions eased out after lunch. They batted positively, ran brilliantly between the wickets and scored at a fair clip to take Bangladesh to a decent position.

Shahriar Nafees scored 97 before being caught behind by wicket keeper Adnan Akmal off the bowling of Umar Gul in last session of the day.

The visitors named an unchanged side following the innings and 184-run victory in Chittagong, while Bangladesh again dropped Mohammad Ashraful from their side. Injury also kept Rubel Hossain out of the team, meaning Robiul Islam and Nazmul Hossain were drafted into the starting XI.

Pakistan fast bowler Aizaz Cheema took 3-52, while Umar Gul claimed 2-63. Shakib Al Hasan who is on 108 and Mushfiqur Rahim who is on 5 will resume play tomorrow.

Bangladesh to tour Pakistan in April 2012

The Bangladesh Cricket Board will conduct a security inspection of Pakistan in January 2012 as a precursor to Bangladesh's tour of Pakistan in April the same year, Mustafa Kamal, the president of the BCB has said. His statements came after PCB officials, including new chairman Zaka Ashraf, met with BCB members in Dhaka.

Following the meeting, Ashraf announced that the PCB had endorsed Kamal as the next president of the ICC. Under the ICC's rotation policy, it is PCB's and BCB's turn to jointly nominate a candidate. If approved, the nominee will assume office as the ICC's vice-president at the end of its annual conference in 2012 and thereafter ascend to the presidency in 2014.

However, Kamal still needs to be approved by a majority of BCB directors by December 24, 2011.

Indo-Pak bilateral series next year scratched

The prospects of arch-rivals India and Pakistan taking on each other in a bilateral series in March next year has received a huge blow after the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) decided to schedule the Asia Cup from March 12 to 22 in Dhaka.

The decision was taken at the ACC s meeting, ending nearly all possibility of the much-speculated bilateral series outlined by the ICC s Future Tours Program during that period.

“It was agreed that the Asia Cup 2012 would go ahead on the proposed dates,” Pakistan Cricket Board’s Chief Operating Officer Subhan Ahmed told ESPNcricinfo.

“There was discussion of the ACC postponing the Asia Cup if both India and Pakistan agreed to play their series within that slot but that idea has faded out for many reasons,” he added.

Ahmed said the Indo-Pak series was never on the ACC agenda but the PCB was hoping to discuss this issue with Indian officials, but every possibility ceased because of the absence of N Srinivasan.

“Pakistan-India series was not on the agenda at the ACC meeting but we were looking forward to Srinivasan coming across to discuss it,” Ahmed said.

“We had an ideal platform here to talk with our India counterpart but he (N Srinivasan) didn’t attend the meeting. He (Ratnakar Shetty) was not in a position to talk on it. So I don’t think India and Pakistan could play each other in a full series next year but they will meet in the Asia Cup,” he added.

Asia Cup dates rule out India-Pakistan series

Zaka Ashraf, the new PCB chairman

The Asian Cricket Council has confirmed that the Asia Cup 2012 will go ahead as scheduled, from March 12 to 22 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, all but ruling out the possibility of Pakistan touring India as outlined in the Future Tours Programme. The decision was taken at the ACC's meeting in Singapore earlier this week; it also endorsed, pending a fuller discussion and satisfaction with security and other issues, a proposal by Pakistan to host the 2014 tournament.
"It was agreed that the Asia Cup 2012 would go ahead on the proposed dates," Subhan Ahmed, the PCB chief operating officer, told ESPNcricinfo. "There was discussion of the ACC postponing the Asia Cup if both India and Pakistan agreed to play their series within that slot but that idea has faded out for many reasons."
The PCB was hoping at the meeting to get some confirmation from the BCCI on the resumption of bilateral series between India and Pakistan but Ahmed said that the BCCI representative, Ratnakar Shetty, was unable to give any assurance in the absence of N Srinivasan, the president of the Indian board.
"Pakistan-India series was not on the agenda at the ACC meeting but we were looking forward to Srinivasan coming across to discuss it," Ahmed said. "We had an ideal platform here to talk with our India counterpart but he [Srinivasan] didn't attend the meeting.
"He [Shetty] was not in a position to talk on it. So I don't think India and Pakistan could play each other in a full series next year but they will meet in the Asia Cup."
Zaka Ashraf, the PCB chairman, was also in Singapore. He was due to travel to Chennai in the first week of December to talk to Srinavasan on the mutual cricketing interests of both countries but the sudden illness of Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari, also the PCB's chief patron, forced him to postpone of the visit.
At the ACC meeting, Pakistan also proposed hosting the 2014 Asia Cup. Ahmed said that the other ACC members showed their support and understood how essential the hosting of the event was for the country but asked the PCB to satisfy them on security concerns. "Our request has been endorsed and was not turned down. They want a full discussion on the precautionary steps that the PCB will take to ensure security. We obviously assured them the best and the case has been deferred until next meeting."

Youngsters must be carefully chosen - Abdul Razzaq

Abdul Razzaq, the Pakistan allrounder, has said Pakistan must be cautious in their policy of picking young players and should ensure only those cricketers with real talent are given a chance. In the last two years, Pakistan have handed 11 different players Test debuts, while another five players have earned their first ODI cap. Razzaq said that rebuilding was necessary, but the selectors should be sure the players they back can be successful at international level.

"Bringing in young players is a good move and that is an ongoing process," Razzaq told ESPNcricinfo. "But only talented players, who are tough and have superb class, should be called up."

Pakistan experimented on their recent tour of Zimbabwe and have a couple of young, untested fast bowlers - Mohammad Talha and Mohammad Khalil - in their squad for the Tests in Bangladesh. Razzaq, though, said players should not only be tried against low-profile opposition. "I remember when I debuted in 1996 my seniors gave me a benchmark, and said I had to prove my ability by performing against teams like Australia, South Africa and England. All the newcomers should be tough enough to face that kind of opposition in order to be prosperous and play at least ten years of cricket."

Razzaq, who is set to depart for Australia to play for the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League, said his next aim in international cricket was to play in the 2012 World Twenty20.

He said he would concentrate on the shorter formats of the game. "I still have some cricket left in me and the upcoming World Twenty20 is what I am focussing on. Test cricket is behind me; it's too late for a comeback. I want to make a final call on that but it's a decision that needs to be taken with the PCB in the loop."

Younis Khan moves up to 5th place in ICC Test rankings

Pakistan’s Younis Khan has jumped up 10 positions in the ICC Test batsmen rankings to take number fifth position after scoring a terrific double ton against Bangladesh in the first Test of the two match series at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong.

Younis, who claimed fifth place is behind Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara, South Africa’s Jacques Kallis and England duo, Alastair Cook and Ian Bell.

Australia opener David Warner is the biggest mover in the rankings for Test batsmen as his unbeaten century in Hobart has lifted him 131 places to 70th position.

New Zealand fast bowler Doug Bracewell’s stellar showing in their sensational seven-run victory in the Hobart Test has lifted him 50 places to 39th position.

The 21-year-old Bracewell had figures of 3-20 and 6-40 which turned out to be the cornerstone of New Zealand’s first Test victory in Australia in 26 years. Bracewell is now New Zealand’s third highest-ranked bowler after Daniel Vettori (seventh) and Chris Martin (up by one place to 16th).

He also appreciated the role of skipper Misbah-ul-Haq, who has been leading the team quite brilliantly in all three formats of the game.

According to Younis, “I will give Misbah 100% marks on his captaincy because he is an educated person and he has the respect of the team. Everybody listens to him and if you want to give him advice he takes it with an open heart.”

On the other hand, Misbah also praised Younis for his consistent contribution in winning matches for the team. The veteran batsman has been one of the best performers for Pakistan in the past decade and is considered to be a real team-man.

He is a Test match specialist and aims to become the most successful player for Pakistan in the format. Currently, Younis has more than 6000 Test runs with 19 centuries to his credit. He has played only 72 matches, but aims to complete a century.

The 34-year-old earlier revealed, “It’s my dream to play 100 Test matches. If I am lucky enough to play 100 Test matches maybe I will be close to [some records].”

The stylish batsman has the ability to play that number of games, considering his form and fitness.

Before scoring a double century against Bangladesh, Younis also hammered a ton in the last Test he played against Sri Lanka. He will look to carry onto the same momentum into the final game of the tour against the minnows and possibly score a third consecutive hundred.

However, his main test will be to repeat such performances against the world number one Test team England, which will face the Men in Green in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the start of next year.

The first Test of the three match series will start on January 17 in Dubai.

Former Australian cricketers wants Ponting to step down

Some of the former Australian cricketers suggest their teammate and retired skipper, Ricky Ponting, to hang his boots with honour before he is axed disgracefully for his continuous lean patch.

The past greats like Shane Warne, Allan Border and Damien Fleming, who happened to rub shoulders with the most senior player of this time, collectively opine that Punter’s peak age is over now, so he must step down voluntarily in favour of some talented youngster.

Ponting has been out-of-form since the past couple of years. His last international century came in 2010. As a captain, he could not lead the team to defend their title in the ICC World Cup 2011. Following the showpiece tournament in the sub-continent, the Tasmania-born legend had to pass on the baton to Michael Clarke under severe pressure by the selectors and fans.

After Ponting experienced some of the worst batting slumps in two recent series against South Africa and New Zeeland, the Kangaroo cricket managers have almost decided to sideline him for the upcoming 4-Test home series against India.

Talking to the media today, Border said, “I think one of the old boys will go. I think Hussey or Ponting will go.”

Warne added, “He’s a great of the game, he’s been fantastic for Australian cricket.”

Fleming told, “Without putting a time limit on your career, you leave yourself open to this. If he said he wanted to play the summer six months ago I reckon the selectors would have gone with that. But he’s said before the Hobart Test that he wants to continue on. Well, his figures are making it really hard for him to get a game.”

Apart from this trio, some other superannuated players have also appealed to Punter to set aside from the game and spend rest of his life with esteem.

Ponting enjoyed great time in international cricket during the last decade. He captained the Oz side to win two consecutive World Cup editions in 2003 and 2007. He was also part of the squad which clinched the tournament’s 1999 version.

With 158 Test, 370 ODI and 17 T20I games to his name, the 36-year-old, like India’s Sachin Tendulkar, wants to hold on for the years to come.

Pakistan ease to innings victory in 1st Test

Pakistan wrapped up an innings victory in the first Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong after bowling their hosts out to 228 all out on day four in Chittagong.

Mohammed Nazimuddin stood firm at the top of the knock, scoring 78 on debut, while Shakib Al Hasan weighed in with 51 before Mushfiqur Rahim tucked into a solid 49. The visiting spinners, however, struck with enough regularity to have the series opener to the two-match affair unable to reach a fifth day.

Resuming from their overnight score of 134 for 4, Shakib Al Hasan and Nazimuddin carried on defiantly frustrating the Men In Green bowlers. The opener smashed left-arm spinner, Abdur Rehman through the point region in the first over of the day before Shakib got into the attack to kick start his innings with a four off Umar Gul.

The left-hander beat his partner to the half-century mark – the first for a Bangladeshi in the match. Nazimuddin shortly followed with his maiden Test fifty, working the ball to the midwicket region. However, just as it looked that they would keep their momentum, Rehman struck to dismiss Shakib for 51.

The left-armer took full use of the rough and caught the player lbw after Shakib failed to connect to a delivery which hit him plumb in front. This effectively also brought the Pakistani spinner his 50th Test career scalp.

The skipper, Mushfiqur Rahim entered the frame and started off with a back foot cut for a boundary. His partner also stretched his muscle to an over pitched ball off Rehman, which resulted in a maximum outcome.

Saeed Ajmal also endured a similar fate in the next over with the Bangladeshi captain hitting a mid-wicket four before Nazimuddin climbing into the spinner to hit another six. With attacking intent, the hosts finally managed to reach to the 200-run mark however, their fun was cut short by Rehman after Nazimuddin failed to execute an inside out shot and departed for 78.

Mahmudullah joined his skipper but his stay at the crease lasted just 8 balls after he fell off Ajmal’s terrific doosra which deserted his forward lunge to clip the off-stump. With the innings in tatters, the hosts managed to deal with the bowling attack to end the first session without any more damage.

After lunch Abdur Rehman get the wicket of Mushfiqur Rahim, who was one run short of his half-century. Mushfiqur was on the back foot, had a huge back lift and the ball slides on before the bat comes down, hit low in front of middle.

A Shahadat Hossain boundary took the deficit below 200 and he found the ropes twice more before spooning a leading edge to Umar Gul at cover off Aizaz Cheema eight deliveries after the new ball was taken.

This ends Bangladesh’s symbolic resistance at 275 with last man Rubel Hossain not coming out to bat due to a shoulder injury. By virtue of this win, Pakistan have taken a 1-0 lead in the two match series

Hafeez and Younis shine, Pakistan in control

An unbeaten century partnership between Younis Khan and Asad Shafiq, and Mohammad Hafeez’s classy century lead Pakistan to 415 for four at stumps on the second day of the first test as Pakistan continued to dominate against Bangladesh in Chittagong.

Younis was on 96, four runs short of his 19th test century, and Asad had 40, as Pakistan extended their lead to 280 runs.

The pitch today looked perfect for batting, as there was no moisture in it. There is also not mush assistance for the spinners at the moment, but that might change with the passage of time.

Pakistan ended day one of the match with 132 runs on the board with both openers Mohammad Hafeez and Taufeeq Umar unbeaten on 74 and 53 respectively.

The pair started off steadily today morning, but Umar was unable to carry onto make a big one. He scored 61 runs off 164 balls with the help of eight boundaries before being trapped leg-before-wicket off the bowling of spinner Mahmudullah.

The ball did not do much to deceive the batsman, who was probably expecting an off-spinner from Mahmudullah.

However, the ball went straight with the line and struck Umar on the pad in front of the stumps. It had pitched within line as well and was not a difficult decision to make by umpire Billy Doctrove from West Indies.

This was the only wicket Bangladesh managed to pick up in the Pakistani innings, as Hafeez and Azhar Ali were rock solid until the lunch break.

The former played exceptionally well, scoring his fourth century in Test cricket. He has been doing a great job for the Green Shirts in recent times, collecting runs in all three formats of the game.

The stylish right-handed batsman played aggressively yesterday, but became a little cautious today morning, as he was nearing a ton. The session was all about Hafeez, as he pushed Mahmudullah into the covers to bring up a well-deserved century.

Azhar Ali provided adequate support to Hafeez and the pair saw Pakistan through to lunch on 212 for one with Ali unbeaten on 24 and Hafeez 113 not out.

When the afternoon session resumed it proved slightly more fruitful for Bangladesh as they managed two wickets and finally ended Hafeez’s marathon stand on 143. The right-hander appeared to get a think inside edge onto his pad to an Elias Sunny delivery, but the umpire failed to see the bat’s involvement and gave Hafeez out.

Hossain also got some reward as he found some seam movement outside off stump and drove Ali into a shot (26). The batsman got the edge and Mushfiqur Rahim completed an easy catch.

Younis Khan and skipper Misbah-ul-Haq then showed their years of experience by seeing out the session to the tea break and taking Pakistan to 295 for three.

The final session saw the hosts claiming the wicket of their opponent’s skipper, who was caught lbw. In trying to attempt a comical paddle sweep, Misbah (20) failed to connect to a full toss and was struck plumb in front.

Asad Shafiq and Younis Khan then got into the act with a commanding display of batting and take their side to 415 for four at stumps of day 2 with Shafiq batting on 40 while his veteran partner, cruising on 96.

With three full days still to be played, the task looks pretty daunting for the hosts.

Pakistan coach to be named after Bangladesh tour

The PCB coach hunt committee has decided on its choice for head coach and specialised coaches, but will make a formal announcement after the Bangladesh tour, with the incumbent in place for next January's series against England. Dav Whatmore is seen as the front-runner for the top job with Mohsin Khan, Aaqib Javed and Julien Fountain tipped to get the batting, bowling and fielding roles.

Col Naushad Ali, a member of the committee and currently assistant manager of the national team, said the committee had made its decision. "The person we have picked as head coach is very well suited to Pakistan," Ali said. "He is the one who suits the temperament of Pakistan cricket and [that] of its team."

Whatmore, currently coach of the IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders, was linked with the post on an earlier occasion, when the PCB eventually picked Geoff Lawson. This time, his name is believed to be favoured by the committee members - Ali, Intikhab Alam, Zaheer Abbas and Ramiz Raja (though the last-named has been out of loop while on tour as a commentator).

When contacted by ESPNcricinfo, Whatmore refused to shed any light on the issue. "I can't say anything," he said. "I am in no position to say anything."

The committee - which is believed to favour home-grown batting and bowling coaches, given Pakistan's traditional strengths in those disciplines - is yet to conduct a formal interview with any of the candidates, but is understood to have been in touch through mail and phone. It is believed the PCB had set up a meeting between Alam and Whatmore under the Ijaz Butt regime but it was cancelled following the change in administration.

The appointment of a coach will fill a slot that's been lying vacant for the past five months, since Waqar Younis stepped down on health grounds. Mohsin Khan was named interim coach and it's understood he wants to continue in some coaching capacity rather than return to a selectorial role.

"I think I have done fairly a good job," Khan told ESPNcricinfo last month. "I haven't applied for the coaching job but if they [the PCB] ask me to carry on, I'd love to do so."
